PLAITFORD, in Melchet Park and Plaitford, originally in Wiltshire
Possibly from hypothetical Old English 'pleget'='playing', the name thus being parallel to 'Playford' (Suffolk), 'ford where games took place' (over a right tributary of the Wellow) and more loosely to the several place names derived from Old English 'plegstow' ('Plaistow' (Essex) 'Plaxtol' (Kent)). There are 2 such place names in Hampshire 'The Plestor' in Selborne and 'Plastow Green' in Kingsclere.
Maybe the ford intended was over the stream that formed the old county boundary; a significant place to have games.
